To ensure our efforts are sustainable, create positive change for generations to come, and avoid another freshwater biodiversity crisis in the future, it is essential we build capacity in the areas with the most need and inspire broad global support.
Capacity Building
The MOBILISE pillar of SHOAL’s three strategic pillars, capacity building equips organisations and individuals in priority countries with the know-how and equipment to act. Empowering these stakeholders means they can deliver vital conservation work close to home, ensuring the longevity of conservation projects.
INSPIRE
Freshwater species conservation receives a fraction of the funding of marine or terrestrial equivalents, due in large part to people simply not knowing about or being inspired by what lies beneath the surface of freshwater habitats. Freshwater species aren’t considered charismatic or sexy in the way that rhinos, tigers, whales and coral reefs are. They are often out of sight, out of mind, and if people don’t know about them, there is no chance they will care about them.
SHOAL therefore works with partners to help create perception shift and INSPIRE people about the world of wonder under the surface – in all its dazzling diversity – to significantly shift the perception of the value of freshwater life from neglect to action.
